7 juin 2010 Relationships between income inequality and health: a study on rural and urban regions of Canada
Many studies have demonstrated that health is a function of relative and not absolute income within populations. The primary objective of this research was to test the ‘relative income’ hypothesis across Canadian health regions. The second objective was to extend the hypothesis to consider rural versus urban populations. Authors conclude that across Canadian health regions, health status in populations was a function of absolute income but not relative income. Regions with higher levels of education had better levels of self-rated health.

This report looks at the diverse factors that influence levels of subjective wellbeing. It explores the impact of demographic and socioeconomic factors, of health, social support and the quality of the societies we live in. It asks to what extent these factors can explain the variations seen in levels of subjective well-being in different countries. The study also examines whether social support and good public services can cushion the impact of difficult social and economic conditions experienced by European citizens, thus contributing to an improved quality of life.

7 juin 2010 Millennium Development Goals in the WHO European Region. A situational analysis at the eve of the five-year countdown
This report provides a situational analysis of progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the WHO European Region on the eve of the five-year countdown to 2015. It addresses all MDGs: those focusing on health (child health, maternal health and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, including tuberculosis) and those addressing key determinants of health (poverty, education, gender equality, environmental sustainability and global partnership for development). Throughout the discussion, the report gives special attention to inequities (in health, the health sector and beyond) and synergies between the MDGs. While the 53 Member States in the WHO European Region have made significant advances towards achieving some of the MDGs, action has stagnated in some areas, and inequities in progress persist between and within countries.
