Social Inequalities

This section showcases social inequalities in health research. It features scientific conferences of interest to social inequalities in health research, highlights current research projects in Quebec and offers a comprehensive list of publications identified by the portal’s intelligence system.

In a Nutshell

While there is no consensus on the definition of social inequalities in health, everyone agrees that they pertain to all relationships between health and social status. Studies are conclusive that whether it is with respect to morbidity, life expectancy or quality of life, there is a correlation between an individual’s state of health and various indicators of social status: income, education level, occupation, place of residence.

Taking this into account, research on social inequalities clearly goes beyond health to include the global functioning of society: relations of power, gender differences, income structure and distribution, access to services, etc. The present challenge for population health research is to advance knowledge on the ways these inequalities are constructed and the mechanisms by which they translate into health inequalities.
