In a Nutshell

HIV/AIDS, smoking-related diseases, and social inequalities in health know no boundaries and require global solutions. Research on global health seeks to respond to concerns that are shared the world over, from developing countries to Quebec. In fact, Quebec and Canadian research on world health has generated tangible benefits domestically because it makes it possible not only to address health problems in poor countries, but also to improve interventions here with respect to health protection and prevention.

Nevertheless, the “10/90 gap” still persists, where 90% of health research spending is geared toward issues affecting only 10% of the global population. Efforts are currently underway to consolidate this type of research in order to bridge this gap. The large number of existing initiatives testifies to this concern, some of which are listed on this page.
